Sure everyone needs a bit of cash, and it’s good to have it, but don’t let it take over your life. Buying stuff you don’t need, with money you don’t have, to impress people you don’t like is no way to live! Here are a couple of home truths about money that you need to keep in mind: first, money won’t make you happy! You don’t believe me? Look at the facts – even though people are better paid, better fed and better educated than ever the divorce rate has doubled, teen suicide has tripled, and depression has soared in the last 30 years. Why? because the human heart easily is seduced. The more you have the more you want.
Secondly, debt will make you unhappy! Samuel Butler once said, ‘All progress seems based upon a universal desire…to live beyond one’s income.’ That’s why King Solomon wrote, ‘The borrower becomes the lender’s slave’ Do you want to be a slave? If not, make sure you stay out of debt! Buying the latest designer label, mobile or a gadget just to impress is a stupid reason to shell out a load of cash you probably don’t have.
Too many of us get into debt unnecessarily. When you’re still paying for something you didn’t need, no longer use or even have, you’re not being wise. To reduce your debt: honour God with your giving, live on a budget, think before you spend – ask: can I live without this? And get some help from a financial expert. Don’t let your money posses you – be its king, master your money.
